What is a luminotechnical study
The luminotechnical study, or luminotechnical project, combines technical knowledge and specific tools to design adequate and efficient lighting systems.
In the luminotechnical study, several factors of the space to be illuminated are considered, in order to ensure that the lighting will meet the functional, ergonomic and aesthetic needs of the environment, contributing to people's comfort, safety and well-being. who use it.
Stage 1 - Needs assessment and definition of requirements
During the initial phase of the lighting study, a survey of lighting needs is carried out, where various characteristics of the space are assessed, such as:
Solar orientation;
Number and size of natural light sources, such as windows and glazed surfaces;
Height of the ceiling;
Predominant colours and materials;
General purpose of the space, the different areas and the activities to be carried out in each one;
Automation needs.
In addition to the needs of the space, when defining the requirements, the lighting standards in force are also taken into account, which vary according to the country and the function of the spaces.
Stage 2 — Development
After collecting all the relevant information, the lighting technician or lighting designer can begin the development phase, in which they look for the best lighting solutions that will adequately meet all the defined requirements.
The selection of luminaires to be integrated into the study is carried out taking into account the amount of light (lumen and lux), color temperature and CRI, beam and angle of light, as well as energy efficiency. In addition to the lighting characteristics of the luminaires, the your potential maintenance, warranty and useful life needs.
If it is compatible with the use of the space and the client wishes, the lighting study can be based on the principles of Human Centric Lighting.
After the initial selection of materials, the project is carried out using specific lighting design software, such as Dialux. Software for lighting studies allows to visualize the effect of lighting on the three-dimensional plan of the space, as well as confirm that the lighting needs (lux) are being met.
Stage 3 - Delivery
In the delivery stage of the lighting study, all the specifications of the lighting study and the selected lighting products are delivered.
Return on investment (ROI) calculations are also presented and, if this study aims to replace an already installed lighting solution, the savings that the new solution will allow.
Importance of the luminotechnical study
The lighting technical study allows you to create a specific lighting solution for each space. In this way, the lighting will be designed exactly to fulfill each of the functions for which it is necessary, allowing to highlight the added value of each space and generate significant savings, both in the acquisition of materials - since Only the materials strictly foreseen in the project will be purchased - in terms of electricity consumption.
In commercial spaces, the lighting technical study is of special relevance, since good lighting can boost sales. Correct lighting in a store, for example, allows good visualization and perception of the quality of products, creates a feeling of well-being in the space, which leads to longer periods of customer stay, as well as improving comfort and, potentially , employee productivity.
